Abandoned hospital on Ellis Island (photograph by Stephen Wilkes)
The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital (also known as U.S. Marine Hospital Number 43) was a hospital where would-be immigrants were held and medical examined. It was the largest marine hospital in the nation. The 22 building complex has been abandoned for many years now.
Stephen Wilkes did a photo series on the abandoned hospital on Ellis Island. On his website you can read about the project, view photographs and buy his book.

I visited Ellis Island in September ‘06 and was surprised to discover many buildings on the island in need of repair/restoration. Here’s a photo link from my trip: http://www.flickr.com/photos/actor_photog/252751235/in/set-72157600799975445/.
