I’ve been listening to the sh*t out of this album for the last week. I’m a sucker for garage rock and supergroups (that aren’t just novelty acts). You might also recognize lead singer Carrie Brownstein as half of the duo starring in the excellent tv show Portlandia.
Drive was absolutely perfect. The real beauty of the film was definitely in the director’s work and Nicolas Winding Refn did a fucking brilliant job. It felt like a real movie, an experience, which is sadly rare these days—so that was thrilling. Oh, and not to mention a totally killer soundtrack that just captured the entire atmosphere completely and brought it into a wholly different realm.
Thelonious Monster - Adios Lounge (duet with Tom Waits).
I knew Bob Forrest from Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew (I’m obsessed) & I knew he was/is a musician. I finally got around to checking out his former band Thelonious Monster. I’m so glad I did. This is my fave tune from this album.
From the time they burst on the music scene, Nirvana had certainly been on my radar and I liked their sound, but I hadn’t become a devoted fan until I first saw this video. My grandmother was over visiting with my mom one day, and she was a Christian soldier for Jesus (but still the greatest Grandma ever). I was around 13, just getting into the thick of my teenage angst, and I was watching the video on MTV. To say she took offense to the Christian imagery in the video would be an understatement. I can remember her voicing her disapproval, and me looking back at the television and thinking, “now THIS is a band I can get behind!” Outwardly, I wasn’t a rebel but on the inside, I was pure punk.
That’s the story about how I fell in love with Nirvana. I still consider them to be my favorite all time band. I will always keep them and The White Stripes in a special place in my heart [Shaped Box].
